To celebrate the start of work on the graphic novel of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" from the Classical Comics range (more info here; [link] )*, =thedreamwolf has decided to throw this contest of sorts to give you a chance to make a contribution towards the book!
What?
As a good percentage of the classic story is set in an enchanted forest that's populated with strange goblins, imps, pixies, pans and fairy folk, there's going to be a wealth of secondary and background characters who aren't listed in the cast list, but will be added to the scenes to make the forest come to life. While I obviously have my own idea of how these critters might look, You are being invited to submit unique and interesting designs for these background fairy folk! Designs (or parts of designs) which catch =thedreamwolf's eye may well end up being included or influencing designs used in the artwork for the book!

Some designs I've done already, as an example.
How?
Entries can be in any visual medium, and concise written
descriptions will also be accepted. You can enter as many times as you like. You can either post single designs as illustration or design sheets, or a whole page of different designs like the ones shown above. Fairy folk can be "Good", "evil" or indifferent, male or female, young or old, humanoid or have animal influences, let your imagination run wild! Please note however that this story is set in Ancient Greece, and so costumes etc must reflect that period, we'll have no modern looking designs, so no punky/goth fairies creeping in there. Costumes can be made from leaves and other natural elements or left out entirely if you're stuck for ideas (I'll have to dress them later though, can't have naked fairy's running about in the book since it will be used in schools!)
Your art can be in any style, but obviously I'll have to change them to match the rest of the art in the book, so very cartoony designs will have to be "realised", and many of the designs included will be "interpretations" and not exactly how they're submitted.
When?
The deadline is 30th November 2009.
Once you've posted your entry please note me with a link, every entry will be collected and displayed here; [link] and also featured on my front page so you can keep an eye on how everyone's doing.
Prizes
There aren't really "winners" and "losers" in this type of contest, just some designs will be selected and others wont. - Entrants who's designs are chosen will have the unique opportunity of seeing their designs re-drawn and situated in the scenes of a delightful graphic novel of a classic fantastical romantic comedy which will be available worldwide! I will also be sending signed (by myself and co-artist ~jasoncardy) copies of the book to particular artists if I think they've done a really great job. Since MSND isn't out till next Summer, entrants can have the choice of a signed copy of one of the classical comics range that we've worked on instead, if you don't want to wait that long! Titles include; "Henry V", "Frankenstein" "Great expectations". Book numbers are very limited however, so will be reserved for those entrants whom I deemed made a special effort.
Because of the obvious potential issues with design copyright/character ownership, I have to ask that every entrant include the following disclaimer in the description of their entries (as well as a link back to these competition details) .. by doing this you're indicating that you understand and except that the likeness of your design may be used in the artwork for the book, as well as ensuring you haven't "copied" the design from anywhere. Any entry which doesn't include this disclaimer, can not be considered as inspiration for the book.
"By posting this I am certifying that this is my own original design, and granting Kat Nicholson (and therefore Classical Comics Ltd) permission to use it's likeness, in whole or part, in artwork for and in connection with their Graphic Novel Title; "A Midsummer Night's Dream"."
Thanks, and happy creating!
